This is a logical conclusion considering that Cap drops his vibranium shield on the ground after Tony proclaims, “That shield doesn’t belong to you. You don’t deserve it! My father made that shield!” at the end of Captain America: Civil War.
But where does this leave Steve Rogers?
We also know that he broke out the captive Avengers being held in The Raft at the end of Civil War, but will these be the “New Avengers” while Tony operates the Sokovia Accords registered Avengers? Time will tell, but what we do know is that Steve Rogers won’t be operating officially as Captain America. Winter Soldier and Civil War directors Anthony and Joes Russo sat down with the Huffington Post and said:
“I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity,” said Joe. “[It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”
Will Steve be carrying the title of Nomad post Civil War as he did in the comics when he lost faith in the government? I would speculate that the next Marvel film he appears in someone on screen may refer to him as a “nomad” more than him taking on the name and especially the silly costume he had. The MCU likes to pay homage in those ways rather than giving you a Baron Zemo fully adorned in purple with white leopard accents.
Look, Steve will be back as Captain America come Avengers: Infinity War (screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely confirm that as well). Knowing that Marvel has been stellar at such payoffs so far I get chills thinking of how that scene takes place already. Until then expect to hear or see news footage of Steve Rogers’ New or Secret Avengers team (Bucky, Falcon, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, Scarlet Witch, and possibly Black Panther) covertly taking out bad guys in other upcoming MCU movies including: Dr. Strange, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and I would especially put money on something being addressed in Black Panther before he appears in Avengers: Infinity War.
What do you think Steve is getting assembled?
His love of most things in entertainment can be summed up by having an English Bulldog named Spielberg and consistently asking if it’s Halloween yet.
