The xx sample Hall and Oates ‘I Can’t Go For That‘ with single ‘On Hold’ off of their new album I See You.
‘On Hold’ is the first new music we’ve heard from The xx since their appropriately and familiarly moody single ‘Together’ from The Great Gatsby soundtrack. This is the first time the band has used a vocal sample in one of their songs. The sample is from Hall and Oates, ‘I Can’t Go For That’ where they repeatedly use the lyrics:
Where does it stop, where does it stop
Where do you dare me to
You’ve got the body, you’ve got the body
‘On Hold’ is about a relationship and a persons decision to leave it on hold or move on. Being on hold is this indefinite limbo. An emotional treading of water that we all have experienced in some form. We often leave our emotions on hold while the world moves on around us. But like the sampled lyrics above, where does it stop?
We’ve come to expect emotionally introspective songs from The xx that still manage to feel upbeat while straddling the moody and chill sound as well. ‘On Hold’ does just that.
The band shared the following statement about their return:
After many years, close together, far apart, great highs, deep lows, heartache and healing, we are so happy to let you know we are releasing our 3rd album I See You on January 13th 2017.
We realise these are uncertain times and we hope the joy and love we found making the record will find its way out into the world, in however small a way.
Our first single ‘On Hold’ is available everywhere now.
Excited to see you all very soon.
