It’s no secret that Leonardo DiCaprio is a real-life environmentalist, and that’s putting it mildly. Now the Oscar winner (I love being able to say that), and UN Messenger of Peace, will put his passion to the pictures with a Captain Planet film.
The Hollywood Reporter announced Monday afternoon that Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions are in talks with Paramount to bring Captain Planet to life on the big screen. Captain Planet and the Planeteers was a popular ’90s television series. If Paramount is able to get the rights to make the show into the film, it’s considering Glen Powell (Scream Queens) and Jono Matt for the script. Back in March, Leo’s production company Appian Way signed a first-look deal with Paramount. If all goes according to plan, Jennifer Davisson Killoran (Executive Producer, The Revenant, The Ides of March) and Leonardo DiCaprio will produce the movie with Glen Powell’s help. Sony did have the rights to develop the project at one point, but those rights have since lapsed.
One noteworthy tidbit:
In the early ’90s TV show, 5 teens used their magical element rings to summon Captain Planet. Together, they’d fight those doing harmful things to the environment. Word is, this movie will take place long after the show’s adventures, and the “has-been” Captain may need the kids more than they need him.
What I want to know is, will Leo play Captain Planet himself? It only seems fitting… What do you think?
