The upcoming Ghost in the Shell live-action film stirred up controversy as soon as its casting became public.
Ghost in the Shell is a post-cyberpunk style manga, whose first film adaptation is pretty universally loved by anime and manga enthusiasts (I am a Cowboy Bebop man myself, but to each their own). The various films, TV series, and comics tell the story of a group of former military and police personnel who investigate political corruption and counter-terrorism in Japan. It is very, very Japanese, in both style and story.
However, when it was announced that Scarlett Johansson would be playing the lead in the live-action film, a lot of people noticed that she was in fact, NOT Japanese. We have yet to see how much backlash the film will face due to the controversy, but the first round of teasers have been released. They are weird, glitchy, and certainly match the aesthetic of the show. View all five of the ten second clips in the playlist below.
If you are a fan, you will see several scenes you recognize. If you are not a fan, you will not recognize anything.
Ghost in the Shell is set to be released on March 31st, 2017.
