As we’ve discussed before, Suicide Squad was DC’s best foray into the new canon of their extended universe films so far. Despite harsh reviews and a pretty active hate for the movie on par with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice the movie made a ton of money. It made almost as much as BvS. In fact, and considering it cost about half what BvS did and also featured a lot of C and D listers general audiences weren’t familiar with. It’s considered a much needed win for Warner Bros. We expected a sequel to happen, but now it’s confirmed.
What’s more interesting is that along with that sequel we are also going to get a Harley Quinn spin-off movie!
This is not an altogether unexpected move, as the Harley Quinn character was easily the most recognizable to general audiences from the movie (besides the Joker of course). The character herself has received undying love from hardcore and casual fans since she premiered on Batman: The Animated Series. Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, has inked a deal with Warner Bros. They will produce the spin-off and she will also be Executive Producer. Robbie fell in love with the character while making Suicide Squad. Apparently she hired an [unnamed] woman to write a script and present it to WB with her. Her enthusiasm for the character is what made this happen and that’s exciting!
Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn was one of the better highlights of Suicide Squad. I’m all for seeing this character get her time to shine some more. THR reported, “In an interesting twist, the project is not a Quinn solo movie. Rather, it would focus on several of DC’s female heroes and villains. With DC bringing in names such as Batgirl and Birds of Prey surfacing.” That’s some awesome girl-power to look forward to.
Both movies are currently in pre-production stages.
