Ben Affleck lights up the bat signal in hopes of finding a partner to direct his first solo Batman movie.
From an exclusive posted with Variety, Affleck stated:
“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,” Affleck said in a statement. “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
This is unfortunate as the DC Extended Universe can’t get any good momentum behind them. Recently The Flash movie lost its second director and is getting a page-one rewrite. This will push back its release indefinitely. Justice League is slated to arrive in theaters this coming November, marking a third attempt at getting a DC property right from director Zack Snyder. But is that movie on anyone’s radar? I already hear talk every week of the next Star Wars or what Marvel property is up next, but a movie starring Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg is flaccid on the pop culture landscape.
Affleck’s statement above sounds like he knows how important the character is and after the embarrassment of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, he knows that more than anyone. Hopefully as producer, co-writer with Geoff Johns, and the star he can find a directing partner. We need a dynamic duo if you will.
What directors can you imagine partnering with Affleck on his vision* of The Batman?
*And it is going to be his vision. Whomever takes the directing job will have to know that going in. This is going to be a collaborative effort.
His love of most things in entertainment can be summed up by having an English Bulldog named Spielberg and consistently asking if it’s Halloween yet.
